Cyprus is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea. According to ancient Greek mythology, the goddess of beauty – Aphrodite – was born here. Majestic Mount Olympus and the Sanctuary of the god Apollo are located on the island. King of England Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart, was married in Cyprus. Alexander the Great accomplished his greatest feats on this ancient island. Cyprus is a priceless treasure for archaeologists: ancient cities, abandoned castles and unexplored caves keep a lot of secrets. For tourists, Cyprus is a place of 240-sun-shining-days per year, of clean beaches with golden sand and exotic nature. In spring, the island is particularly attractive – the land is covered with fragrant floral carpet, grapefruit and lemon plantations that fill the air with their heady fragrance.
The Cyprus’ history goes back to the eighth millennium BC. Therefore, all the secrets of the first settlements on the island are still not revealed: archaeological excavations on Cyprus are annually conducted by different scientists and archaeologists – as a result new interesting finds join the collections of the island’s historical museums. For many years, Cyprus had been part of the Roman Empire, then – the British Empire, Greece and Turkey. The island abounds in unique monuments of history and archaeology, as well as rich nature. The Kyrenia Mountain Range with its highest point Mount Olympus is one of the most famous natural attractions in Cyprus. On this mount, mythical gods and goddesses pre-determined the fate of people. Today, thickets and clean beaches are located within these impressive ridges. World famous sea caves of Cape Greco and Cape Greco National Park with its virgin nature are located on Cyprus.
Many unique historical monuments are surrounded by this beautiful virgin nature. The beauty of the island is unique due to a great combination of different styles and epochs in the architecture and culture of Cyprus. Here you can see the remains of Stone Age settlements, Roman villas and theatres, Greek and Byzantine churches, monasteries with unique mosaics, Venetian fortresses and castles of the Crusaders, Gothic cathedrals and Turkish mosques. Panagia Chrysaliniotissa Church, a Byzantine church located in Nicosia, has gained fame due to its unique collection of ancient icons. Hala Sultan Tekke is the world-fourth of the most important holy places for Muslims.
Ancient buildings of Cyprus complete its architectural shape. The city of Amathus and the Paphos Mosaics – the remains of the buildings of the third millennium BC – are among famous tourist destinations. Medieval Kolossi Castle and Venetian fortresses of the 14th-15th centuries are worthy to be visited as well. The ruins of Bellapais Gothic Abbey and the Roman baths at Salamis have been preserved till present days. You will see the Sanctuary of legendary Apollo and the Baths of beautiful Aphrodite, as well as the Tombs of the Kings, a large necropolis carved in the rocks in the 4th century BC.
The architecture and archaeological wealth of Cyprus favour the development of the island’s museums. The Shipwreck Museum is famous due to the ship of Alexander the Great kept there.
A visit to the Museum of Folklore Art to learn the folk crafts of Cyprus. Lefkara, a village this museum located in, is famous for its unique handmade lace.
The Cypriots traditionally organize colourful festivals and celebrations which you can see nowhere, just on Cyprus. Wine Festival is one of the highlights of the island; it lasts for two weeks in Limassol. Since the times of Dionysus, a mythical god, the Cypriots have kept their traditions of wine making; and only during the festival, they initiate its visitors into secrets of the gods’ drink making. By the way, Commandaria – strong and sweet nectar of the gods – is considered to be the most famous and delicious variety of wine on the island. You are also advised to visit the festival of beer, celebrated on the island. An integral part of the Cyprian culture is Flower Festival, held in May, when the locals thank the nature for its amazing wealth.
Be sure to learn the culinary traditions of the Cypriots and taste their dishes, including various delicious soups. Dishes of meat, especially lamb, are in favour of the Cypriots. Oriental and Mediterranean spices are an integral part of the Cyprian cuisine.
